Use the jlicense.cmd utility to update your VCM license key. Run jlicense.cmd on the VCM Web server, which might be different than the Collector if you chose a split configuration.

VCM Installation Manager installs the jlicense.cmd utility at the following location or relative to the path where you installed VCM.

With the jlicense.cmd utility, you can perform the following actions:

  • Update a license key for any of the following types:

    • Servers

    • Workstations

    • vCloud Suites

    • vRealize Operations Manager Suites

    • vRealize Suite

  • Update any two keys, typically used for updating servers and workstations in one command. You cannot enter more than two keys.

  • Add keys after upgrading VCM. You might want to take advantage of features such as the suite key support in VCM 5.6 and later, even if the upgrade did not prompt for keys.

A new key overwrites the previous key. For example, if your existing key licenses 200 servers, and you purchase a key for 100 more, entering the new key sets the total to 100 instead of 300.

To update to 300, you use the self-service VMware Manage License Web site, and combine the old and new keys. The combination creates a third key that you then enter with the jlicense.cmd utility. See the self-service VMware Manage License Web site at http://www.vmware.com/licensemgmt/login.lic.

For servers and workstations, exceeding the limit on your license key produces warnings but does not restrict VCM operation. License key counts that are over the limit are recorded and maintained for auditing purposes. Suite license keys support unlimited licenses, provided that the suite edition includes VCM and the component that you are managing is part of the suite. If a component is not part of the suite, it counts against the nonsuite server or workstation key.

Caution If you enter two keys, you must enter different key types. If you enter two keys of the same type, only the second license key is applied.

Use the following syntax with the jlicense.cmd utility. At a command prompt, you can perform the following actions, where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is a license key.

  • To evaluate a license key but not install it, type jlicense -n -k xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.

  • To change one license key, type jlicense -k xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.

  • To change two license keys, type jlicense -k xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx,xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.

  • To use a jlicense.properties file other than the default, add the -c path option, where path points to a custom folder containing a jlicense.properties file.

  • To remove a license key, type jlicense -r xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.

  • To display jlicense help, type jlicense -h.

IDS Software License Renewal Process

IDS Software Licenses must be renewed to continue using IDS beyond the expiration date. The license renewal process consists of two steps:

  1. In the IDS Software License Account* - Create a new 20-digit renewal activation code.
  2. In IDS - Activate the new 20-digit renewal activation code in IDS.
*IDS Software License Accounts accessed as follows: Ford Dealers and Ford Internal Users: PTS website, Ford Fleets: Fleet.ford.com → Maintenance → Technical Resource Center → PTS, Retail Customers: Motorcraftservice.com → IDS Software Licensing
Step 1 - Creating a New Renewal Activation Code in PTS

There are two ways to create a new renewal activation code as described below:

  1. Auto Renewal Process - (Available Only to Dealers and Ford Internal Users)
    This process automatically creates a new renewal activation code thirty-four (34) days before the existing license expires.

  2. Manual Renewal Process - (Available Only to Retail and Ford Fleet Accounts)
    This process requires an action to select the Renew Button from the IDS Software Licensing Screen to create a new renewal activation code as shown below.


The above two processes create a new renewal activation code and assign it to the same Reference Number of the currently licensed activation code. Newly created renewal activation codes will be displayed and highlighted on the IDS Software Licensing Screen as shown below.


To view all the activation codes assigned to a given Reference Number, click on the Reference Number on the main IDS Software Licensing Screen.


The Reference Number details will then be displayed as shown below.


Step 2 - Activating a New Renewal Activation Code in IDS

There are two methods within IDS for activating a renewal activation code, both methods require an internet connection and are described below:


  1. Silent Activation Method
    • This method automatically activates the renewal activation code in IDS.
    • There is no screen displayed when the license is activated.

  2. User Initiated Method
    • This method and allows the user to activate the renewal code at any time by selecting the System Utilities Page → License Management → Renew a License as shown below.

    • A screen pop-up will display after completing the activation.


Once the renewal activation code is activated using one of the activation methods described above, the System Information Page in IDS will be updated with the new Activation Code (last 4) and the new expiration date as shown below. The IDS Software License Screen in the IDS Software License Account also updates the Status field to ‘In Use’.
